The rural market town of Evesham is located in the county of Worcestershire in England. Being centralized to Worcester, Stratford-upon-Avon and Cheltenham the area became known as the Vale of Evesham. Thanks to its original location in the Loop of the Avon River the town has been flooded many, many times. Probably the first recorded history of the town cam in the middle 1200s when the major battle, the Battle of Evesham, was waged. Here is where Simon de Montfort was defeated on August 4, 1265. Later the town became home to the Evesham Abbey which grew to be one of the largest abbeys in Europe. The town continued to grow and it soon became one of the major market gardening centers. Peace was interrupted when the town of Bengeworth, which lies on the east side of the river, attempted to take power. They were unsuccessful after an incident between the knights and monks ended in the knight's castle being leveled.
The abbey is unfortunately not still standing, but there are several interesting sites still to see in the Evesham area. One of these wonderful sites is St Lawrence church. This wonderful church actually forms a group with the parish church of All Saints and the only remaining piece of the abbey, the Perpendicular bell tower. Its architecture is definitely a beautiful sight to behold. While setting on a Norman foundation the church itself is in the Perpendicular style, since it was rebuilt in the 1500s. By the 1700s it was almost completely in ruins but was restored in the early 1800s with restoration work completing in 1836. There is a wonderful six-light window that has an elaborate tracery. The chantry of the chapel of St Clemet is complete with paneled arches and fan vaulting. This church is worth making the stop inside to see the wonderful construction.
Thanks to being in a centralized location there are many areas near Evesham that are worth a trip out of the town to visit. One of these stops is the Hidcote Manor Gardens. Located near Evesham in Hidcote Bartirim, this beautiful garden is considered to be one of England's greatest gardens. The grounds were designed by Major Lawrence Johnston and are segmented in to different "garden rooms." Each of these rooms has its own unique personality. Wander this serene landscaping and discover the vibrant colors of spring, or the bold red borders of autumn. You will also find a wild variety of shrubs, trees, and many unusual plant species. Because of its variety in its plants you will be sure to find something in bloom year round. Don't think that you just have to visit in the spring to see the best this garden has to offer. If possible come back at least once a season to fully appreciate this wonderful garden.
