In the Cumbria County is a town known for having the shortest, widest and deepest canal in the United Kingdom. The market town of Ulverston, once known for this interesting little canal, is now known for its many sites and festivals.

The canal is usually high on the visitor stop list. In its heyday the canal was known for bringing in the ships. Because of the changing tides, however, the canal is not tidal these days so the ships can't make it in and out of the canal. Today it is a beautiful freshwater environment. Home to a variety of wildlife many unique to the area the canal is popular with visitors that want to enjoy the nature at its best. Not only can visitors enjoy the beautiful wildlife but they can learn about the history of the canal and area.

Nature lovers will find that there is more to enjoy to Ulverston than just the canal. Ulverston is known as the starting point of the Cumbria Way. This beautiful walking path takes you through the National Park. It is a seventy mile trek that winds through many different towns in the Cumbria area. Ulverston marks the beginning of the trail with a limestone statue in the center of town.

Ulverston is also known for its famous son, Stan Laurel, or Laurel and Hardy fame. Visitors can visit the museum dedicated to the duo. Learn about Ulverston's famous son during your visit. You might even learn a thing or two about comedy and movies while you're visiting this wonderful museum.

Festivals are a big part of Ulverston's attraction. Throughout the year there are several festivals for visitors to enjoy. Even though there are a large variety of different festivals to enjoy throughout the year, the most popular is the Lantern Procession festival. The local residents make their lanterns out of tissue paper and then get together to parade through the town with them. Visitor to the area they can watch as the river of light winds its way through the town. Once all the way through the town there is a large fireworks display at the end of this one day festival.

There are other great festivals to enjoy. There is a Comedy Festival, held in honor of Mr. Laurel, Music Festival and even a Folklore Festival. Each of these festivals are held in the civic center which is also home to many works of art and plays host to the English Touring Opera.

One of the great things about the town that visitors will notice is the slower pace of the town. Even though it is a usually teeming with visitors and tourists, the people of Ulverston don't get in a huge hurry. Visitors can enjoy the slower pace and actually relax on their vacation.

While the visitors are enjoying the relaxed pace and atmosphere they can enjoy some unique shopping. There are very few name brand stores so visitors can be sure to get something exceptionally unique during their stay.
