The canal is usually high on the visitor stop list. In its heyday the canal was known for bringing in the ships. Because of the changing tides, however, the canal is not tidal these days so the ships can't make it in and out of the canal. Today it is a beautiful freshwater environment. Home to a variety of wildlife many unique to the area the canal is popular with visitors that want to enjoy the nature at its best. Not only can visitors enjoy the beautiful wildlife but they can learn about the history of the canal and area.

Nature lovers will find that there is more to enjoy to Ulverston than just the canal. Ulverston is known as the starting point of the Cumbria Way. This beautiful walking path takes you through the National Park. It is a seventy mile trek that winds through many different towns in the Cumbria area. Ulverston marks the beginning of the trail with a limestone statue in the center of town.

Even though there are a large variety of different festivals to enjoy throughout the year, the most popular is the Lantern Procession festival. The local residents make their lanterns out of tissue paper and then get together to parade through the town with them. Visitor to the area they can watch as the river of light winds its way through the town. Once all the way through the town there is a large fireworks display at the end of this one day festival.
