The ancient town of Melton Mowbray is located in Leicestershire county England. Bordering the Rivers Eye and Wreake, Melton Mowbray is known as the Rural Capital of Food being known for many of its culinary creations. This small town is not just a foodie site but an archeological haven as well.

One of the first things many people head is Ye Old Pork Pie Shoppe Dickinsons and Morris. This popular shop is the place to head when you want a Melton Mowbray pork pie. Melton is credited for creating these tasty treats. If you want an authentic pork pie you have to go to Melton, and the Ye Old Pork Pie Shoppe is the place that many people visit to get their pork pie fix. Contrary to popular belief the Ye Old Pork Pie Shoppe does not make their pork pies but get them from a nearby factory. No matter where they are made they are made with the same standards that have come to make a Melton Mowbray pork pie apart from the rest.

Another gastric specialty that Melton is home to is the Stilton Cheese. Originally made in the nearby village of Stilton, the cheese is today made in the town of Melton. Travelers far and wide come to Melton Mowbray to get an authentic piece of the cheese.

One of the places of interest near Melton Mowbray is the Belvoir Castle. This Norman castle is stunning to see. The original castle was built some 400 years (or more) ago but there was a lot of damage to it during the civil wars. Much of the castle had to be rebuilt. Visitors can enjoy touring the castle grounds that have been recently restored by the current Duchess of Rutland.

Located just ten minutes from the center of Melton Mowbary is the Melton Country Park. Visitors can enjoy this 140 acre area with its football pitches, picnic areas, and play areas for the children. There are plenty of birds to see, including swans, and paths to walk too. So load up the kids and the dogs and head out for a relaxing afternoon here.

If you are itching for some water, head over to Rutland Water. This 3,100 acre reservoir offers not just wildlife conservation, you can see many birds and other forms of wildlife here, but leisure and water sport activities. If you aren't interested in windsurfing, rock climbing, or canoeing you can always lounge on the 25 mile shoreline and just watch the tides roll in.
