Located in northern Worcestershire England on the River Salwarpe is the spa town of Droitwich. The town was settled back in Roman times and was then known as the town of Salinae. It's location on a massive deposit of salt which made the town a popular spa town in the nineteenth century. But it was extracting the rock salt and brine that put the town on the map. The brine located in Droitwich contains two and a half pounds of salt per gallon, making it ten times saltier than normal sea water. The only brine that contains more salt than Droitwich is the Dead Sea.
Many people used to come to Droitwich because of the healing properties of the spa. While the waters that you will sit in are warm, they are not considered hot baths because they are still lower than human body temperature. Unlike many spa towns their healing properties of the Droitwich spa doesn't come from drinking the water but rather relaxing and floating in the waters.
Other than the waters another popular reason that people visit Droitwich is the shopping. The shopping area is mainly centered in the Victoria square in the center of town. The area leads to the Andrew's Square shopping center as well as down the original High Street. Victoria's Square is home to the traditional Farmer's Market that is held regularly. As for the Andrew's Square shopping center you will find a wide variety of shops. There are traditional shops, big name stores and even a few cafe's and pubs sprinkled in. You can find just about anything you are looking for here.
A popular stop for everyone is the Droitwich Spa Lido. The Lido was originally opened in the 1930s and was an art-deco style building. The original set up had a brine-filled open air pool. The salt in the water was enough to keep the pool from needing any extra chemicals to keep it clean. The Lido was closed in the 1990s but was re-opened in 2007. While the pool is still filled and maintained with brine water the deeper diving end has been filled-in to lower the pool's heating cost. Around the Lido are several water parks to make the area even more attractive to visitors.
