The largest town in North Wales is the town of Wrexham in Denbighshire. It is not only the main retail and commercial center of northern Wales but it is also the administrative center of North Wales. This area was settled over 8000 years ago and is the first known settlement organized by humans in North Wales. While the area has been settled for thousands of years the actual town has only been in existence since 1161 when a castle was established here.
It is the retail capital of northern Wales so that means there is plenty for the shopper to see and do. With its many retail locations and local shops you can be sure to find something interesting and unique. Shopping on a budget is no problem here because as well as the big name stores there are plenty of economy friendly spots for you to go crazy at.
For the sightseer there are plenty of things for you to do as well. The Parish Church of St. Giles is a perfect example. This church which was built between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century is an architectural homage to the end of the medieval period and the beginning of the modern age. This wonderful church is full of signs of faith that span many centuries. Being dedicated to the patron saint of cripples, beggars, and blacksmiths, St Giles, is no mistake but that doesn't mean that there is any skimping on work here. There are intricate wood carvings, beautiful stained glass and absolutely wonderful artifacts. The tower alone is worth the trip having been deemed one of the "Seven Wonders of Wales."
Of course what would be a trip to the Welsh countryside without stopping to look at the ruins of one of its magnificent castles? The Holt castle was built in the late 1200s and is a standard stone and baily fortress. This castle was built to be the administrative center of Wrexham and replaced the original castle, Castell Dinas Bran, which was built sometime in the 1100s. The Holt castle resides on the same hill-top site as the original castle. Unfortunately thanks the dismantling of the castle all that remains of these Edwardian ruins is the thin interior walls which are structured in the shape of a pentagon. It is still an interesting site to see if you are visiting the Wrexham area.
