Ruthin, located in Denbighnshire County in North Wales (and at the base of the transcendent Clywdian Range), is first and foremost a city steeped in History. Founded in the 13th Century, Ruthin exudes the strange and beautiful synthesis between Celtic and Anglo-Saxon cultural influences. For example, Pendref Chapel built in the early 19th Century, hints of Saxon, Celtic, and modern designs. Another structure, the Myddleston Arms, is of Renaissance Dutch design. Medieval street design facilitates walking, which in turn can lead to a greater appreciation of the Welsh treasures.
Of course, no trip would be complete without gazing upon, venturing to, Ruthin Castle, the timeless beating heart of the area. Containing an award winning restaurant (Bertie's Dining Room) and Welsh themed bar, one can soak up the stunning art amid the timeless backdrop of the castle. Also on location at Ruthin Castle, a full spa treatment is available to the weary traveler and pampered local alike.
On one's journey, be sure to visit the Ruthin Craft Center, which contains a variety of local products, and the plethora of pubs and eateries. The areas abundant botanical delights culminate in the Ruthin Flower Show, which features a parade and an impressive festival atmosphere that is sure to be amenable to families and single folks alike. Bucolic scenery tends to spawn musical inspiration, and Ruthin is home to an annual music festival to commemorate.
Given the surrounding countryside, one cannot go far without running into famous pastimes such as fishing, canoeing, and horse riding. Above all, do not leave without playing a famous round of golf in the area's many golf clubs and courses. In particular, the Ruthin-Pwllglas Golf Club, located near the Ruthin Castle, is a nine hole beauty.
Given the town's medieval structure and style, the medieval theme is a popular one for banquets and wedding events. One almost will feel part of the area's royal lineage, with Ruthin having an Arthurian link via a local historical narrative.
When visiting, one will find ample, warm, and even rustic lodging, surrounded of course by Welsh beauty in terms of art and architecture. Be careful of getting too comfortable; one might not want to leave!
