On the River don, lies the town of Rotherham South Yorkshire. Even though the area shows signs of Iron Age and Roman settlements the town itself, Rotherham, wasn't actually settled until the Early Middle Ages. It became a key Saxon market town. It then became the place for iron and steel. The town is still known for its steel today. Rotherham has also been known for its glass works and flour mills. Thanks to its rich history, Rotherham has many different things to do and see for visitors to the area.
One of the places to head is the Wentworth. This house is actually two stately homes that are built back to back. Built in the 18th Century, this house is a favorite stop for tourists. This home is not opened to the public but it is located on a frontage road that allows the public to view the house from the outside.
The Clifton Park Museum is also a popular stop. This museum is home to extensive and interactive displays. You can view many unique artifacts. Many of these artifacts actually date back to prehistoric times. It is a great place to learn about the history of the town and area.
For those that are interested in regimental history head over to the York and Lancaster Regimental Museum. Here you can see many unique military objects and memorabilia. If you are interested in the military then this museum is a stop that you must make.
The ruins of the Old Holy Trinity Church in Wentworth stand in the shadows of the new Holy Trinity Church. The original church building construction began in 1548. These ruins can be viewed. Even the new church is no longer used as a place of regular worship, but both are a popular tourist stops and are a sight to see.
If you are there with the family there are a variety of places to go and see with the kids. A popular stop is the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre. Here you and the family can get up close and personal with the free roaming animals. You can handle snakes and birds. You can then feed the marmoset monkeys. You can still visit this great spot if the weather is nasty. There is an indoor play area, gift shop, cafe, and picnic areas to enjoy.
For kids who are interested in science then you should head over to the Magna Science Adventure Center. This center is set in the former steelwork and is the first Science Adventure Centre. You can head through the four pavilions: Earth, Air, Fire and Water to learn about the world around us. Once you're done learning then head outside to the HI-Tek playgrounds, one of the largest in all of Europe.
If you are tired of stuffy museums and other indoor areas you can head to any one of Rotherham's great outdoor areas. Rotherham is home to a variety of parks that you can head out to. Some are home to beautiful gardens, others have water sports and urban parks.
