Doncaster was the main settlement or the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. It is known as an important hub in Europe with the building of Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, an international airport that opened up in 2005. Also there is an existing Doncaster International Railport facility that connects to the Channel Tunnel.

There is a great deal of new buildings that include the joining of the bus and railway stations to the Frenchgate Center known as the Frenchgate Interchange as well as new facilities for the Doncaster College campus. In June 2006 the shopping center was added on to and new bus station was built to accommodate all the bus routes in Doncaster.

Starting in the 16th Century Doncaster got involved in the lucrative stagecoach trade industry. This started a wave of horse breeding that then began the horse races there. The Doncaster Gold Cup saw its first race in 1766 at Cantley Common. The Doncaster Gold Cup is still the oldest regulated horse race the world has to offer.

The race course set up shop in its current location in 1776 at which time Colonel Anthony St. Leger began races that had five horses in them. This has since become the world's oldest classic horse race and is still being done today. During WWI race horses were utilized in the military and from 1915 to 1918 substitute races took place in Newmarket.

In 2007 the race course underwent major renovations. It received a new exhibition center, blood stock sales, stable and grandstand. In August of 2007 it had its first trail run and reopened fully in September. The Princess Royal helped reopen the race course with the presentation of a traditional Doncaster sweet of Parkinson's Butterscotch.

There have been many leisure developments recently with the addition of a community sports stadium to be used for men's and women's football. There is a rugby team that plays consistently in the rugby league of National League One. Also housed there is the professional wrestling team One Pro Wrestling. In 1969 and 1970 at Doncaster Greyhound Stadium help speedway racing.
