One of the biggest tourist attractions in this little town is the fact that it is surrounded by many mountains. The presence of the mountains makes the town a desirable center for hillwalking. Many mountain climbers are also attracted to the area and enjoy scaling the many mountains near the town.
Because Pitlochry is situated on the banks of the River Tunnel many enjoy a variety of fishing activities. Angling, fishing and boating are popular outdoor pastimes as well as hillwalking and mountain climbing.
The dam for the town's power station is also a spot for tourists. Their three hundred ten meter salmon ladder is a great attraction. The salmon can be viewed from an underwater viewing station swimming from weir to weir within the ladder. Those that don't want to go view the fish at the viewing station can also see video of the fish at the Visitor Center.
Among the many pubs that are found in Pitlochry, there are also two whiskey distilleries. The Edradour is a single-malt whisky whose distillery is a hit with people visiting Pitlochry. The distillery was founded in 1825 and produces only twelve casks per week. The distillery still uses the smallest still in Scotland. They offer a free tour of the distillery to visitors who are interested. Their tour includes a free dram of whiskey for each visitor.
The Blair Athol distillery is the older of the two dating back to 1798. This distillery also produces twelve year old single malt whisky. You can tour this distillery as well but there is a charge of five pounds per person and includes a discount voucher to be used towards a 70cl bottle of whiskey. Children under eight years of age can tour most of the distillery but are not allowed to tour the production area.
While the scenery is the biggest tourist draw here in Pitlochry, you can find some interesting things to do in this small tourist town.
