Located underneath St Boniface Down, in the county of Isle of Wright is the seaside resort of Ventnor. This sheltered location is located on steep slopes and cliffs that lead down to the sea. The higher part of the town is known as either Upper Ventnor or Lowtherville. Visitor's generally flock to Ventnor which is located a little lower down the cliff on the beach and is where all the major amenities are located. Ventnor was originally settled and became a small fishing town in the nineteenth century but became a popular tourist destination after the Isle of Wright Railway made its debut in 1866.

It is a seaside resort first and foremost so this is where the visitors flock to first. And there's little wonder why, the beautiful Ventnor Beach is a great place to while away the day. You can splash in the wonderful ocean or sun yourself on the shore, either way it's a great away to catch some sun. When you tire of the beach life you can always head to one of the nearby pubs or cafes to get you something cool to drink or tasty to eat. Many of the cafes offer locally caught seafood. You can even sit on the beach and watch the boats leave and return with their daily catch.

Of course, while the beach is the main draw, it's not the only thing to do and enjoy while visiting Ventnor. The Ventnor botanic garden is located at the heart of the undercliff. Thanks to its location the garden is protected from cold northerly winds. Because the chalk downs shield the gardens it actually holds a great deal of warmth making frost a non-issue. Because of all of this you will find a fascinating collection of subtropical plants that is grown completely outdoors. Stroll through this magnificent garden and enjoy the color and beauty that can be found in it's equally unique micro-climate. While you are at the gardens be sure to take in the specially designed wall. This wall was created and built specifically for the Wall lizards that live in and around Ventnor. This area is known for having the largest colony of Wall lizards in Britain and it is an interesting sight to see.

If you are interesting in doing some shopping you will find that there is no shortage of opportunities here. The main shopping area of town has many different "knick-knack" and specialty shops for you to choose from. Take home a unique souvenir to commemorate your stay. If you are interested in antiques you'll have your choice of these type shops as well. Take a day and roam the shops to find something that you might want to call yours.

If you are looking for just somewhere to spend an afternoon then why not go to the town's small park. Located on the west side of town this park has a bandstand, stream, and aviary. The quaint garden also has a waterfall which you can see from the main path. There is a paddling pool on the sea front and an area for children to play.
