The busy ferry port of Stranraer was established in 1596. Thanks to its close proximity to Ireland there are close ties between Stranraer and the Emerald Isle. There are many interesting things to see and do while visiting this town.

One of the most popular stops is the Castle of St John. Built in 1510, it predates the town by over 80 years. The town built itself around this castle overlooking the Loch Ryan. In the 17th century the Castle was used by the government to garrison troops that were trying to suppress the Covenanters. In the 18th century the castle was purchased to become a jail but failed to keep prisoners in since many of the jailers were too drunk to remember to shut the gate. The jail closed in 1907 and went unused, surrounded by shops and offices. The 1960's brought an end to all the buildings of the castle except the main tower which is now a museum. Here visitors can view many artifacts throughout the life of the castle including illustration of Covenanters and their flags.

Visitors interested in the natural geological features can visit the Logan Fish Pond. This fully restored Victorian Fish Larder is set in a unique setting. It is a natural tidal pool created by a blow hole that was formed sometime during the last Ice Age. It is a site to behold.

Golfers can also enjoy the Stranraer Golf club. Set on the shores to the Loch Ryan the 6308 yard offers visitors a challenging game of golf. It also has beautiful views f Ailsa Crag and beyond.

Families can enjoy the Drumlocart Caravan Park. Located five miles outside of Stranraer, families can enjoy the natural beauty of the woodland and clearings while exploring this 22 acre park.

For those who are looking for a little adventure take the Town Trail. This trail begins at the Castle of St John and leads you around the town. Thanks to the haphazard growth of the city of Stranraer it's easy to miss some of the fascinating historic buildings. The Town Trail will lead you on a closer look at some of these sites and you might find some hidden treasures during your walk.

Those with children you might want to head to Agnew Park. Here there is not only the beauty of the country side but there are activities to enjoy. The kids can burn their energy playing on the playground, using the pedal boats or participating in crazy golf. There are also train rides for the young ones to enjoy.

There are beaches here as well, but if you are looking for sandy beaches it is best to head a few miles out of town to Sandhead. The beaches at the loch are all pebble beaches, but they can still give you some fun in the sun.

If you visit between October and April you can enjoy watching the ancient Scottish game of curling which is played at the local ice rink. If your are adventurous you can even try playing the game yourself.
