Stirling is a city in Scotland, in the county of Stirling (or Stirlingshire). A city with deep roots in the past, Stirling was a kind of gateway between the lowlands and highlands of Scotland. With a population of nearly 45,000 in Stirling proper, this city has continued to grow around its central castle, and remains one of the fastest growing cities in Scotland. Historically an agricultural center, the somewhat diminished role of farming has given way to other activities, such as financial services (like insurance and banking) and tourism. Several projects, including a major regeneration effort, are aimed at linking the beauty and ruggedness of the countryside with the many modern amenities that continue to grow in Stirling. Football and rugby are as popular in Stirling as is common in much of the UK. Local transportation is provided almost solely by bus, while railway allows convenient access to the major cities of Scotland. The University of Stirling, named the Scottish University of the Year for 2009-2010 by one major news outlet, provides a high quality academic experience for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, while indirectly affecting the cultural milieu of Stirling in positive ways.

One cannot come to Stirling without seeing the Stirling Castle, one of the best preserved Castles in all of Scotland, and the historical heartbeat of the city. One can also visit, in a very short trip out from the city, the Wallace Monument, erected in honor of the Scottish Patriot William Wallace, and intended as a monument to freedom and rich Scottish history. Another excellent way to get a feel for the local culture is to visit the Smith Art Gallery and Museum, which contains much in the way of local art as well as artifacts from the areas past.

While visiting Scotland, especially an area as lovely as Stirling, remember to take time to walk the adjoining hills behind the city. There is a specific path located behind the University of Stirling that is highly recommended. Perhaps more fascinating is the fact that Scotland's lone, legitimate African Safari Park is located in Stirling. This provides a fascinating contrast to the natural beauty of Scotland, and offers a very family friendly activity for all to enjoy.

While Sterling offers a variety of food choices, from Chinese takeaway to steakhouse, don't leave without sampling a variety of local cuisine. The Lake of Menteith Hotel and Restaurant prides itself on using local produce in ways meant to honor the culture and surroundings. An excellent way to finish a breathtaking day in the gateway to the highlands.
