Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful natural features in all of the United Kingdom. Aside from the deep, vast, and phenomenal lochs, there are many hills and mountains, gloams and forests, meadows and so much more that all look like something out of an art anthology. Scotland of course has many large and beautiful cities as well but many of these, like Glasgow, seem to clash with the beautiful surroundings instead of enhancing and enlivening them. Luckily, this isn't the case in all instances and the south-west part of Scotland seems to have struck the perfect balance between natural beauty and man-made splendor. The city of Prestwick is a great example of this harmony and despite the fact that cities like Ayr and Glasgow are both very near Prestwick maintains its own lovely identity in spite of the massive behemoths that it is in such close proximity to.

Prestwick has somewhere between fifteen to twenty-five thousand residents in its district, depending on how you draw it out, but this number is neither too small nor too large. The latter is an important fact because Prestwick does seem to be growing rather quickly in comparison to many cities in Scotland and the U.K. as a whole. All the same, the way that the town is handling its growth is rather remarkable and should be seen as great blueprint for other up and coming towns to follow. The best barometer of a town's growth can be seen in the prevalence of airports in the area and as we speak Prestwick Airport is considered the fastest growing airport in Scotland. In spite of its growth, however, Prestwick still adheres to tradition. The city has had a longstanding relationship with golf and it is recognized as the first home of the Open Tournament. This may not seem like a particularly remarkable fact until one realizes that the first Open championship took place in 1860 and the famed Prestwick Old Course was the site. The idyllic beauty of the course must have even been more staggering back then and evidence of that fact is made clear when we find that the town became the de facto home of the Scottish Open for the next dozen years during the most pivotal and primal years of the concept.

Prestwick has also had an important role in Scotland's aviation industry since the 1930s, a time when the country was just coming to grips with this fascinating new technology. The aforementioned airport is still Scotland's shining jewel despite the fact that it is no longer the premier transatlantic gateway that it once was. This isn't because of anything to do with the airport as much as it has to do with the fact that most air travel is cheaper and more convenient when compared to the monolith of achievement that is the Prestwick Airport. This is perhaps the best example of the integrity and values that Prestwick holds dear. Rather than conforming to convenience and settling for mediocrity, Prestwick sees beauty in all that it holds dear and ensures that its ideals never fall prey to popular appeal.
