The town of Lockerbie Scotland lies in the county of Dumfries and Galloway. There is evidence that the town of Lockerbie was settled during the Viking times, around 900AD. The name Lockerbie means Loki's Village in Norse. The town actually doesn't show up in written records in 1306. There is evidence that the area actually dates back to the Roman times, with the remains of a Roman camp a mile outside of the town.

Tragedy put Lockerbie on the map. The explosion of PanAM flight 103 in December of 1988 took place in the skies above the town. A total f 270 people were killed in the explosion, which includes the 11 Lockerbie residents that were killed when the plane fell back to earth. Today there are a couple of memorials marking the tragedy that took so many lives. Visitors can visit the Garden of Remembrance located in the Dryfesdale Cemetery. Here you can see the wall of names for all that were victim to this terrorist attack. You can also go to Tundergarth and see the Book of Remembrance in the Memorial Room. If you are wandering the town and notice the stained glass windows in the Council Chambers, you'll see the flags of the countries of those who perished.

While you are at the Garden of Remembrance in the Dryfesdale Cemetery check out the Dryfesdale Parish Church. Like many of the buildings in Lockerbie and the surrounding area the church is built in red stone. On a bright sunny day the exterior shines but it is outshined by the brightly decorated interior. Go and sit in the chapel and enjoy not only the peace that can be found inside but the wonderful architecture and decor.

Of course Lockerbie isn't all about touring tragic monuments or old buildings. If you are in the area during the summer you might want to take in one of the Lockerbie drama club's play reading. Or you might even be lucky enough to catch one of their full blow plays, which they only hold twice a year. The club has been around since before World War Two.

You can also visit the Rammer Scales Sawmill. Here you will get to see an actual working saw mill. See how trees are cut and made into different kinds of lumber. It is both interesting and educational. You will not look at wood the same way again.

Once you've finished seeing all the sites, there are several old buildings in town that might interest you because of the architecture; you might want to enjoy one of the many pubs Lockerbie has to offer. You can settle down for a pint of your favorite beer. If you aren't ready to hit the pubs yet then take to the High Streets and do some shopping at any one of their many shops and boutiques. There is plenty for you to see and enjoy during your stay in Lockerbie.
