Llangollen's former stronghold for the princes of Powys, Castle Dinas, is a steep but short walk to see the spectacular view from the ruins where you can view the entire town easily. Llangollen is on the river Dee and just across its bridge you will find the town. Llangollen holds the International Eisteddfod yearly. It is a festival of music and dance that has over fifty thousand people attend it annually. People come from over fifty countries to enjoy the week long celebration that is always held in July.

It was started just after WWII to united the nations with music and has seen many famous competitors through out the years. Pavarotti and his hometown Modena choir came through when he was just a teenager in 1955. His father was also a member of the choir which earned the best male voice choir award that year. The celebration starts off with a parade that is lead by the Llangollen Silver band who give free music instruments and scholarships for tuition for the children in the town and them the Eisteddfod ends with a grand concert.

Llangollen is the home to many forest birds that include buthatches, woodpeckers. Flycatcher and treecreepers. All of the birds can be seen through out the summer month in fields that are located leading down from Castle Dinas. There are also barges lead by horses on the canal. Bracken can make it difficult to spot trails leading to and from the castle during the summer months because it is so badly overgrown. It is hard to find suitable accommodation in the early part of July because the Eisteddfod make the town very crowded. The hotels and inns are normally booked way ahead of time.

Sitting next to Llangollen Bridge is a pun called the Corn mill. The pub features a terrace that looks over the river. The terrace is a perfect place to have an ale then see the steam trains depart form the station across the way that has been restored. You can also get a view of people canoeing on the river. Plas Newydd was once the home to what locals called the Ladies of Llangollen. These women were two wealthy lesbians during the Regency period whose relationship was scandalous yet riveting to the other townsfolk. There manor is black and white with a peaceful garden that has since been turned into a museum that opened in 1978.
