Lewis has a rich history and strong Presbyterian influence due to its former inclusion in the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Currently, the town is very different than others in Scotland for its Sabbath observance where the language of the Gaelic and peat cutting are still significant. The heritage of the culture there can be found in the many legends and myths as well as the local musical and literary traditions.

The first evidence of people in the Lewis area can be seen in samples of peat that show that 8,000 years ago, most of the woodlands that surround it were burnt down to make room for grassland to feed deer. The remains that have been found by archaeologist date back to 5,000 years ago. It was during this time, that people started to settle there on a permanent basis on farms instead of being nomadic with their herds. The remains of their small houses can be seen all around the Western Isles.

In around 500 BC, Lewis came into the Iron Age. Buildings were built larger and more prominent. All this lead to the building of brochs, dry-stone circular towers that were owned by chieftains locally. The best preserved broch is in Lewis at Dun Charlabhagh. The Scottish arrived in about 1AD and brought the Gaelic language with them. After the 6th Century, Christianity spread throughout Lewis after Columbian missionaries settled in the area. The vikings started to settle Lewis in 9th Century after spending years at sea raiding.

The Norse invaders eventually married into local families and stop their pagan practices. This is when most of the buildings changed from round to rectangular shapes after the style of the Scandinavians. During this time Lewis was part of the Kingdom of Mann and part of Norway. In 1831, founded there was the Lewis chessmen that dates from Viking rule. The people were named Gall-Ghaidheil or the Goreigner Gaels that showed their mix of Gaelic and Scandinavian heritages as well as there bilingual abilities. The Norse language was shown in the many place names on the island and some family names still today.
