Hope Valley in Derbyshire England is a valley that is centered around the village of Hope. Located in the Peak District of the Northern Midlands this area is not made up of just the valley in the town of hope but the surrounding "Post Town" villages. Each town has its unique history and popular tourist destinations.
One of the popular stops in the Hope Valley is the Bagshaw Cavern. This wonderful cavern is a natural cave system that was discovered in 1806 by miners. The open layout of these caves make it a perfect setting for people who haven't had many adventures in caving. If you don't mind getting a little dirty and getting a little exercise you will see some of the most interesting beautiful sights in Hope Valley. The show cave has 102 steps that descend into a chamber that contains the features Elephant's Throat and the Chandler's Shop. It is worth spending the day wandering the underside of Hope Valley.
Go from looking under the valley to overlooking the valley. Mam Tor is probably the most famous viewpoint in the Hope Valley area. Overlooking the Hope and Edale Valleys the Mam Tor is also known as the shivering mountains. The Mam Tor got this nickname by the fact that the mountain is comprised of shale and the eastern face is beginning to crumble. The area that lies directly below the mountain is moving constantly and everything there in heavy rain area slips further down into the valley. The sight is home to an interesting fort that dates back to the Iron Age. It's an interesting tourist stop for visitors. Be sure to take in the sites before it is totally gone.
For an ancient man made site then you'll want to head on over to the Hathersage Church. This church stands just above the village on a knoll. It is found close to the remains of the ancient Danish settlement found here. The current church dates back to the late 1300s. The site has been home to various churches that predate this church by at least 200 years. The church is home to several wide varieties of important people in the Hope Valley area, most notably the Eyre family. Other than the wonderful architecture the main reason most visitors hit this area is for the most famous of all graves. It is home to the famous grave of Little John. It's an impressive size grave and many people flock here to see it.
