The Scottish bough of Girvan is located in south Ayrshire County. This town of around 8000 people started out its life as a fishing port. Today because of its ideal setting Girvan has become a popular stop for the seaside tourists. With its beautiful beaches and picturesque cliffs it's no wonder why many people want to stop at this wonderful little resort.

Since it is a seaside resort the first place many people head is the beaches. Lendalfoot beach is one of the more popular beaches in Girvan. This beach consists of long sandy beaches and wonderful water. The kids can enjoy splashing in the waves while you sit in the soft sand. The wondrous scenery makes it one of the best places to take a romantic stroll. The scenery includes of course the ocean but it is also surrounded by wonderfully colored hills with a view of Ailsa Craig. Family or alone, it's the place to spend the day.

Another great beach to visit is Finnart's Bay. This bay is located on the shores of Loch Ryan and instead of having a sandy beach like you would find at Lendalfoot this beach has the shingle shores. You get a wonderful view of the Rinns of Galloway and several beautiful cliffs that extend past Garry Point. Because of its rocky terrain it's not necessarily the best place to take the kids to soak up the sun but there is lots of grass and picnic areas for a nice lunch while you enjoy the views.

If you are interested in geology then you might want to brave the rocky terrain of Kennedy's Pass. This is probably the most dramatic coastal spot in Givan. It has many wonderful rock formations that allow you to see rocks that are well over 400 million years old. It does require caution for those who want to head out there but the walk across the structures is wonderful and interesting.

For those that want to learn more about Girvan and the surrounding area then go to the McKechnie Institute. Here you will get to see a wonderful building that was opened in 1889. The design of the building itself is historical having been built in the Scottish Baronial style, with some Renaissance detailing. Inside you will find a collection of artifacts from the Girvan area. You will see items about the local trade, social activities and even the old fishing industries. There are also several areas of temporary exhibits that allow items to be rotated through the country side.

If you are looking for one of the most historic buildings in town then a visit to Stumpy Tower is a must. Built in 1789 this tower was once used as a prison. The top of the tower contains a clock. Originally this tower was one of many that formed the original square where the Market Place was held. Today it is the only one of these old buildings that remain, the others were demolished in 1908.
