In central Scotland are the town and county of Falkirk. The name of the town translates in to "speckled church" and is believed to have been given to the town for a church that was located in the area. It has been a place of great historical significance. In 1298 the first Battle of Falkirk took place here. In this battle William Wallace was defeated by King Edward I. The second battle took place in 1746 between the Jacobites. The government army was defeated.

Probably one of the best known sites in Falkirk is the Falkirk Wheel. The wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world. It connects the Forth and Clyde canal with the Union Canal. These two canals were once connected by a series of locks but by the 1930s the locks were no longer used and many of the eleven locks were filled over with earth. It wasn't until near the turn of the century that the plan to reconnect the two canals was conceived. It was planned to be a dramatic 21st century landmark and it has succeeded. The Wheel rotates taking the ship from the upper canal down to the lower canal while simultaneously taking the ship from the lower canal up to the upper canal. It is an engineering marvel. The full rotation of 180 degrees to exchange the two ships takes roughly five and a half minutes to complete but very little energy is used during the process.

Another popular stop is the Callendar House. This house has a history of over 600 years which include playing host to several historical figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charles, Queen Victoria and Oliver Cromwell. The home was originally known as the Thane house and was the one of the many seats of the Callander Family who was the Thanes of Callander. It was in the fourteenth century that Sir Patrick Callander attained the lands by supporting Edward Balliol. The estate is still part of the Callander family. Today, however, the home has been fully restored and is used as a heritage center. It is also the main museum in the Falkirk area. Visitors can step back in to the world of the Georgian era. It really is an interesting stop when you are in the Falkirk area.

If you are in the Falkirk area during the first part of May then you might want to take in Big in Falkirk. This is the premier art festival held in the Falkirk area. The award winning festival is probably considered one of the largest cultural events in Scotland. It is a conglomeration of music, theatre, art, and other displays. You can see the outdoor contemporary theatre or take in a comedy show. Interested in pyrotechnic displays, there are plenty of these to see as well. It has gained increasing popularity each year. Big in Falkirk attracts some 100,000 visitors and is completely free to attend. If you are in the area you really should check it out.
