Located on the River Conwy in northern Wales, the County Borough and town of Conwy is an ancient town. Founded somewhere in the early 1200's the city is home to many pieces of history. Conwy is the site for visitors to enjoy many pieces of architectural history.

The first place most people head is to Conwy Castle. Building on this ancient site began in 1283 under the instruction of Edward I and was completed by 1289. Until the castle was built the center of Conwy had been Aberconwy Abbey. Today the castle remains are popular with visitors. The battlements look out across the sea and mountains. The castle is unique in that it doesn't have a wall with in a wall effect going on, the castle was built from the rock on which the castle stands and giving it the massive strength equal to the double walled variety. This castle was used as the key fortress in Edward I's "iron ring" of Welsh Castles. The castle walls, which still remain, enclosed the original town making it a safe home for its inhabitants. It is the most complete Walled city in Wales.

Another stop to make while visiting Conwy is Plas Mawr. This 16th Century house is considered to be an architectural gem. Built in the Elizabethan era the home has been fully restored and is a rare find. Visitors can enjoy touring this home, which has been called the finest surviving Elizabethan house in England.

After you leave Plas Mawr, head towards the quay to find the oldest surviving house in Wales. The Aberconwy House was built in the 14th century and was once owned by merchants. Today it has been restored to its full beauty and gives visitors a glimpse of the past residents daily lives. Or while visiting the quay side area step into to the smallest house in Britain. This home is only 9'9" tall and a mere 6' wide. Hard to believe that it's last occupant was well over 6' tall.

If its buildings that interest you, keep heading down the quayside to the public library. Here you won't see anything that shouts architectural prowess. Unfortunately, Conwy is not just the home of the oldest homes or the most complete walled city in Wales it is also home to the ugliest building in Wales. The concrete monstrosity that is an extension of the public library leaves a lot to be desired but in all fairness to being the best, Conwy's got to add having the ugliest to their list.

Many visitors like to sit and enjoy the harbor. The beauty of the bay and watching the busy boats go to and from is a favored past time. You might even charter a boat and head up stream to see the beauty of the area from the water.

Conwy is filled with the best of the best and ugliest of the ugly. Its rich history make it a must stop for anyone wanting to enjoy the country of Wales.
