On the River Teith is the burgh of Callander. The Gate Way to the Highlands is a popular stop for visitors to and from the Highlands. It is also home to the many different festivals and games. There are many things for visitors to do and see during their stop in Callander.
Callander is home to many different festivals. Visitors in the area the last weekend of July can enjoy the World Highland Games. With games like the shot putt, throwing the hammer and caber toss, visitors can watch the competition of traditional games. There is also a dog show, craft fair, piping competition and more.
Those that enjoy classic cars should head to the Callander Classic Weekend held during August. Car enthusiasts can enjoy seeing over 600 sport and classic cars. Over forty different clubs gather together to celebrate these awesome cars.
Jazz lovers should head over to Callander during the month of October. With a wide variety of performers this three day festival, visitors can enjoy their favorite style of jazz.
Callander was home to Scotland's answer to Robin Hood, Rob Roy. The old St. Kessog's Church is now the Rob Roy Center. This tourist center will provide you information on the Trossachs area. Rob Roy MacGregor lends his name to the tourist center, having been made famous by Sir Walter Scott who wrote about the hero and often visited the area.
Those interested in Rob Roy can see the hero's grave at the nearby Balquhidder Church. Located a mile outside of Callander it is said that you can see his ghost at night. His grave is next to his wife, son, and brother's. The church's graveyard is also home to many other interesting tombstones and of course the ruins of the old church.
Visitors to Callander will also enjoy visiting the Hamilton Toy Collection. The Hamilton Toy Museum and collection has many different types of dolls, soldiers, tin toys, die cast vehicles as well as another variety of toys for you to view and enjoy. The collection dates back to 1880. These antiques are interesting for anyone who is a fan of toys and history.
There are also a few walking paths for visitors to explore. The meadows at the west end of Callander Main Street will give you access to the walkway that runs alongside the River Teith. You can wonder past the preaching mound of Tom na Chessaig and then past the graveyard. The paths can take you around the town to see many of the different sites of Callander.
