Located on Bala Lake is the small market town of Bala. Once known for its textile manufacturing, this small market town is now mainly known for the fun white water rafting. The town is also has the 11th highest concentration of Welsh speaking people. They are also ranked highest percentage of Welsh speaking among the 5 to 9 year olds. Thanks to its rich history and location there are many things to see and do during your stay here.
The thing that Bala is probably best known for is their Whitewater rafting. The Llyn Celyn feeds into the Afon Tryweryn which runs through Bala. This area is full of rapids that will get your adrenaline pumping. You will be carried down the course of the steep rocky mountain river. You can take a raft or kayak whichever is more entertaining to you. You can be assured that no matter if other rivers don't have as much water for people to enjoy; this area is controlled by a dam that allows the river bed to keep its rapids no matter what!
Even if you don't want to get all wet by riding the rapids you can still enjoy life outdoors. There are riverside trails for you to explore. You can also enjoy a nice picnic in one of their many picnic areas that are located around the riverside. Take the time to enjoy the beauty of the Snowdonia National Park during this time.
Once you've gotten your fill of the great outdoors then you should head into town to see many of the local attractions. Bala is home to several churches for you to view. The Chuch of Llangower is an ancient early English structure. It is considered by some to be a rather plain looking church, while others bask in its simplistic style and charm. While it is no longer home to services visitors you can still enjoy wandering the grounds and seeing the beauty of the location and architecture.
Another popular church stop is the Llanuwchllyn Church. This church is not as old as many of the other churches in the area, dating back only to the late 1800s. This church, like many of the other older churches in town, is also no longer holding services but like the Llangower church it is interesting to see the beauty in the architecture.
If you are looking for some fun and sports then head on over to the Bala Leisure Center. Here you can enjoy a modern facility that includes several sporting opportunities. There is a swimming pool, racket courts, sauna, and many other amenities. It is also has a lake entrance for those interested in heading outside for canoeing and windsurfing.
If you are heading back outdoors for some other fun water sports, such as canoeing or windsurfing then you might be interested in Angling. The Bala Angling Association provides both coarse and game fishing on the rivers and lakes. You can fish for salmon, perch, grayling, brown trout, or even eel.
