Yeovil, the quaint south Somerset town, was located on the main Roman road that connected Dorchester to the Fosse Way. With a history that dates back to 880AD the town of Yeovil is home to many Paleolithic remains.

The Museum of South Somerset is a great place to get a feel for the town. At the Museum of South Somerset visitors can discover what rural life was like during the roman occupation all the way up through the industrial revolution. The displays include glove and leather making as well as stone working and other past eras. Since there have been many Paleolithic remains found in this area, there are many fossils and other artifacts on display here.

Another site that should be visited during a visit to Yeovil is Lytes Cary Manor. This manor house, chapel, and gardens date back, in part, to the 14th century. Even though other parts were added in the 15th, 16th, 18th, and even 20th centuries, all the parts mesh well together so that they flow. Even though the house originally was built in the late 1200's the remaining parts of the house weren't built until the 14th century. The chapel itself actually outdates the remaining parts of the house. Visitors can tour parts of the home and chapel and of course the gardens. Photography within the buildings is, unfortunately, not permitted at this time.

The Montacute House was built during the late 1500s. It is home to many Tudor and Elizabethan portraits. There are many wonderful exhibits form the 17th and 18th centuries that include textiles and furniture. Visitors can stroll the grounds viewing their unique collection of mixed boarders, roses and topiaries. IT is a stop that many visitors enjoy during their stay in the Yeovil area.

If you are interested in the great outdoors then you need to visit the Ham Hill Country Park. Here you can see picturesque views of South Somerset. There are steeply sloping Iron-Age rampart, large meadows, and even a deserted medieval village for you to explore. This 400 acre park would be of interest to anyone who loves nature. It is a wonderful place to add to your list of places to see and enjoy.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the East Lambrook Manor Gardens. These gardens are considered to be among the best loved privately owned gardens in England. The combination of contemporary and "old fashioned" plants is extraordinary and are well worth the visit.

Yeovil is a town full of beauty and cultural sites for visitors to enjoy.
