Woking is in the London commuter belt and a dormitory town. The earliest appearance of the town was in the 1086 Domesday Book but as Wochinges. It was said to have been help by King William the Conqueror followed by Walter FitzOther, Constable of Windsor Castle and then Ansgot and and Godfrewy from Osbern FitzOsbern and last by bishop Exeter.
The modern town was built over 150 years ago around the railway station as a junction from the London line to the south coast as well as the southwest of England. Brookwood Cemetery had a private railway built for it by the London Necreopolis Company as an overflow for the dead of London. Woking was also the home of the UK's first crematorium as well as the first mosque. The Shah Jahan Mosque was built on Oriental Road by Shahjehan, Begum of Bhopal. She was one of only four female rulers that were Muslim that reigned from 1819 to 1926 and the mosque helped build the town rise in its Asian population.
The 1898 War of the Worlds written by H.G. Wells was based north of Woking in Horsell Common. It was a science fiction novel about England being invaded by Martians. It is one of the first and best written novels about alien invasion and was an inspiration for many others. It also inspired the making of many movies as well as several radio and television series that are based on the book. The US radio broadcast in 1938 that consisted of a reading of the story, was taken seriously by the public. It lead to an outcry because many listeners actually believed that there was a real Martian invasion happening followed with mass hysteria.
