On the Nene River in Cambridgeshire is the market town and port of Wisbech. Founded sometime during the Iron Age the area quickly grew to become part of the East Anglia kingdom after the Anlgo-Saxon Invasions. In the 1000s, Wisbech Castle was built by William I to fortify the town. This historic town is now home to many interesting sights for visitors to enjoy.

Wisbech Castle is probably the most popular site in Wisbech. This motte and bailey style castle was built in 1072. After helping to fortify the town from invaders it turned into an infamous prison during the Tudor times. The castle was then rebuilt during the mid-17th century and again in 1816. While the castle interior is not open for public tours you can book it for private functions, meetings and weddings. You can see the beautiful architecture from the outside of the building.

Another popular stop for tourists is the Peckover House and Garden. Built in 1722 by Jonathan Peckover this home was built for the Peckover banking family. While the exterior isn't much to look at, while beautiful it is plain, the interior is both elaborate and elegant. With fine paneled rooms and Georgian fireplaces with carved mantles it is an absolute gem to behold. In the back of the house is the wonderful walled garden. It is complete with orange trees, thought to be nearly 300 years old, roses, herbaceous borders, fernery, rare trees, a summer house and a wonderful 17th century thatched barn. It is worth taking time to visit this wonderfully preserved home.

Another tourist attraction is the Octavia Hill's Birthplace Museum. Octavia Hill was born in 1838 and is credited as being the founder of modern social work. She was a pioneer of affordable housing and advocate for those in need. She helped co-found the National Trust, which helps to protect over 300 historic properties. Here you can learn about this woman who was ahead of her time. See what it was like to live in her time, with the challenges she faced. Children can see exhibits of giant bed bugs and other horrors that were common place in Ms Hill's time. You can learn of her fight against disease and poverty. Weather permitting be sure to go out to one of the "outdoor sitting rooms" that was part of the hidden courtyard of the home. See the beauty and serenity of the garden as you stroll through it.
