Warrington sits in Cheshire, England as a unitary authority and borough. It is located on the banks of River Mersey just to the west of weir Howley. The town is historically a part of Lancashire. It was started by Romans as a vital point of crossing for the River Mersey. The Saxons established a new settlement in the Middle Ages. It was an important market town and bridging point. Tool and textile production started locally during this time.

During the Industrial Revolution Warrington had a major expansion and urbanization period after the River Mersey became navigable during the 18th century. Running north to south is the West Coast Mainline and running east to west is the Cheshire Lines Route. Cutting through the south of the borough running west to east is the Manchest Ship Canal. Forming a partial box around the town are the motorways, M6, M56 and M62.

Those who are born in the town are called Warringtonians. In 1974 it was made into the current Borough of Warrington when the former County Borough of Warrington was amalgamated. Since ancient time Warrington has been known as a major River Mersey crossing point. During medieval times Warrington was a vital bridging point and during the English Civil War a fulcrum. Oliver Cromwell's armies as well as the Earl of Derby stayed near what was the center of town by the area of the parish church. It is believed that Cromwell stayed near the current Cottage Restaurant that is located on Church Street.

There is a plaque on the public house Marquis of Granby that states the Earl of Derby stayed close to the site. There are dents in the parish churches walls that are believed to have been caused by cannon fire from the Civil War. The town is the center of many industries including steel (especially wire), brewing, tanning, textile and chemical. During the 1970s to 1980s saw a heavy decline but the new growth around Warrington led to a boost in employment in light industry, technology and distribution. Many residents commute to work as well as many people who work in the town come from other areas. This has lead to the town's chronic traffic issues and delays. Especially during peak travel times.
