Truro may not be considered a particularly large town since its population is a sparse thirty thousand at the most. Truro isn't even the largest city in Cornwall, which itself isn't an extremely noteworthy county. All the same, Truro is one of the most unique, fascinating, and enjoyable cities in the entire United Kingdom. There is truly no city that is quite like Truro. It is the most southern city in all of Great Britain and many people think that this may have something to do with the fact that the city beats to its own drum.
As mentioned above, Truro is not the most populous town in Cornwall. Despite this fact, the city does serve as Cornwall's center of administration, retail, and leisure. Truro has a long history of being highly desired by its surrounding people and one can even go as far back as the days of Norman conquests and see Truro's importance as a port town. Later Truro became one of the most sought after mining towns in Britain and the spirit that somehow drives people to Truro is still very much alive today.
Ask most people who have been to Truro why the town is so endearing and their answers will likely have something to do with the beautiful architecture in town. Georgian houses and buildings can be seen everywhere you look and the feeling you get upon entering the town is that of a lost paradise that has never been touched by human hands. Many experts agree that Truro has the most impressive and the most intact Georgian architecture in the United Kingdom aside from the town of Bath. Cobbled streets help to further the fantasy and there is truly something fascinating to look at everywhere you go in Truro. If you're there visiting, though, it is recommended that you take a trip to the famed Truro Cathedral before your vacation ends. This imposing yet beautiful edifice, built in a gothic-revival style, is considered to be Truro's shining gem and its spires reach over two hundred and fifty feet in the air. This cathedral dates back to the 1880s and it took over thirty years for this massive monument to finally be completed.
Unfortunately, there are a couple drawbacks to the wonder that is Truro. For one, many people who live in Truro don't work in town and thus must commute to larger towns. This makes traffic congestion a very real problem and it is one that the Truro city council is striving to correct. The houses in Truro are also among the most expensive in Cornwall with a typical Truro house costing as much as ten percent more as a similar house in another area. The stately beauty and antiquated splendor of the town, however, makes such prices easier to swallow, however, and many residents of Truro would gladly trade a bit of extra money in order to be granted access to the timeless treasure trove at the southern tip of Great Britain. As for the rest of us, we'll just have to be content with visiting every once in a while.
