Only eight miles southwest of the city of Northampton in the county of Northamptonshire is the small town of Towcester. This ancient town is known as an old Roman town but it was probably inhabited well before then. There is evidence that the area has been populated since as early as the Iron Age. This makes Towcester one of the oldest towns in the Northampton County.
If you are looking for things to do in Towcester then you'll find many interesting items. For starters you should just wander around the town. You will find that a great many of the buildings in the area are considered Grade 2 historical sites. The entire central area of the town is designated a conservation area as well. You should take in the wonderful architecture and history of the town just by looking at some of its wonderful buildings.
There are also other things for you to enjoy. If you are in Towcester on the second Friday of the month then be sure to take in the local Farmer's Market. You can find some delicious tasting treats there while sampling some of the local produce. Local is always the best.
You can also enjoy a great day at the races. This course, which is located at the Easton Neston estate on the east side of town, is home to many horse racing events. There are several important national events held here each year. Take a day and watch the races, even if you're not a "horse person" you'lll find it entertaining.
There is also a motor racing circuit located near here. It is the current home of the British Grand Prix. The spot is featured in The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens as a stopping place for the main character. So if horses aren't fast enough or loud enough for you, why don't you go watch a motor race, it'll really get your adrenaline pumping.
Be sure to take in some of the Northampton countryside during your stay. The beauty of the rolling hills and serene scenery will have you relaxed in no time. While you are investigating the country side you might find a few items of interest such as the Tove River or even St. Lawrence Church. You could even stumble across a castle motte while you are out taking in the tranquility of the surrounding area.
