Stourbridge is located within the metropolitan borough of Dudley. The town was probably best known for the glass production that has taken place since the early 17th Century. Although a wide majority of the glass making occurs in the areas surrounding Stourbridge it is all called Stourbridge glass. Today there are many interesting things for families to enjoy.
If you are into shopping then you should head up to the high street. There are many popular retailers such as Ethel Austin, Specsavers, Wilkinsons and Somerfield as well as many quaint local shops to enjoy. While in the area be sure to enjoy any of the many tasty eateries located there.
If you are interested in the great outdoors then head over to Clent Hills. This area, which is nearby to Stourbridge, is popular for walkers and hikers. It is probably the most popular hill walking hill in all of England. Many enjoy walking up the hills to see some of the architectural works that adorn them. While many of these pieces of architecture are on private property, such as Hagley Hall, they can be seen from the public walkways. Some of them like the Four Stone which is located on top of Clent Hill are on the public walk through so visitors can fully enjoy them. No matter if your interest is simply the architectural beauty or the natural, Clent hills has many things for visitors to enjoy.
While wandering the Hills then be sure to stop and look at Hagley Hall. There is a part theater that has been in existence since the 1300s. This park was where Robert Wintour and Stephen Littleton, of the gunpowder plot fame were captured by authorities. The present hall wasn't constructed until over 150 years later. The house was then damaged by fire in 1925 but was painstakingly restored. Today the hall is still in use but the Wynchbury Hill is open to the public. You can view the outside of the hall from this area, it is a site to behold.
Located in nearby Wordsley is an interesting structure. The Red House Cone is just as it sounds, it is a 90 foot cone that was once used for the production of glass. The structure dates back to the late 1700s and is open to the public today as a site for craft shops, glass blowing demonstrations, provision for temporary exhibits and a cafe. Visitors can climb the platform to view the interior of the cone more closely. This is one of only 4 cones remain in the United Kingdom and is home to the only surviving moving lehr in the world.
