South Shields is located in the county of Tyne and Wear, in the Northeast of England. South Shields is very much a coastal city, located right next to the mouth of the River Tyne, with a population of approximately 90,000. The city sets as essentially a peninsula, being situated where the river flows into the North Sea. With approximately six mile of coastline and 3 miles of area running along the river, the eye is naturally drawn towards South Shields beaches and other coastal specifics, including rock formations peculiar to the local geography. Though the location of South Shields helped the town to become very successful in terms of industrialization, other activities, including tourism, are becoming more and more prevalent. "Geordies," as the locals are often known, are very proud and welcoming. Given the beautiful scene that is South Shield and Tyne and Wear in general, this draw towards tourism and recreation is not at all surprising.

Given the ample shoreline, water activities are a premier attraction. From sailing to ocean fishing, and from cliff diving to simply enjoying the sun and surf, South Shields offers variety. The traveler will find a wealth of information regarding services that cater to those coming simply to enjoy the majestic beaches. Whilst enjoying the coastline, do be sure to visit the Souter Lighthouse. Not just a historical object of veneration, the Lighthouse has activities for the entire family. However, once the kids do go to bed, the beach does take that extra special step once the sun goes down, no lighthouse needed!

For those who deeply enjoy the history of England, and especially those fascinated by ecclesiastical history, Bede's world offers a unique experience. Located in the town of Jarrow (very close and easily accessible to South Shields), this location is all about the historical interest of the Venerable Bede, a 7th-early 8th century monk and churchman. In fact, many of the activities are hands on, and one will come away not just with a deeper appreciation of Venerable Bede, but also with the domestic life of the age and the surrounding historical context. Also for the historian at heart is the Arbeia Roman Fort, located at a strategic nexis to what was Hadrian's wall in Northern England. Through an appreciation of this structure, one can begin to understand the deep contours of culture that run through South Shields and Tyne and Wear as a whole.

With friendly people, beautiful beaches, fantastic local food, and a rich heritage, one might consider never leaving this avalon of Northeast England.
