In North Dorset England lies the town of Shaftesbury. The town is located on the side of a greensand and chalk hill. At 718 feet above sea level Shaftesbury is the only significant hilltop settlement in Dorset. It is also one of the highest towns in all of England. The town's history dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and it is believed that it was settled by the Celts. The first actual written record of the town appeared in 880, the Shaftesbury Abbey followed soon after in 888 and spurred the importance of the town.

While you are in Shaftesbury be sure to check out where it all started. The Shaftesbury Muesum and garden is set in the foremost Benedictine Nunnery. This site was founded in 888 by King Alfred. The Museum catalogs the important moments in this abbey's influential past. The Abbey is credited with being the "catalyst" for moving the town into the prosperity it has achieved. When you've finished with the exhibits inside be sure to check out the splendor of the gardens. You'll definitely find the calm serenity that you've been looking for.

Another great stop is the Gold Hill Museum and Garden. This museum is found in a traditional sandstone cottage on top of Gold Hill. The museum is located in what was once a doss house which was used as accommodations for the traders, drovers, and jugglers that came into Shaftesbury for the markets and fairs. You will see many interesting exhibits on not only the history of the town but some of the people who have passed through here as well.

If you are up for a little outdoor adventure then you should travel to nearby Kingsettle Wood. This area has over 50 acres of coniferous and broadleaf woodland for you to enjoy. Wander the area and take in the beauty of this man made wood. That's right while the conifer trees are native to the area the broadleaf trees were planted here and are not native. You will get to view many of these extraordinary plants together.

And what is a trip into the English countryside without a stop at a castle. Located just outside of Shaftesbury is the Old Wardour Castle. This castle was built in the late 14th century as a luxurious residence for John Lord Lovel. The interesting shape of the tower house and positioning around the central courtyard is both beautiful and unusual. While you visit the damaged remains you can listen to an audio tour that will give you the full history of the castle. And if the castle looks familiar to you it should. It was used during part of the filming of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
