Settle England is located in the Carver district in North Yorkshire County. The area of Settle has been in existence since about the seventh century. Its name is derived from the Angle word for settlement. Between 1069 and 1071 survey for the Domesday Book, the area was described as "waste". However, by the mid 1200s the town was granted a Market Charter by Henry III. Thanks to the charter and its location in the Ribblesdale Settle has become a popular place for tourists.

One of the biggest draws to Settle is, of course, the weekly market. This market is still held on Tuesday and is located in the town center. If you can't find what you are looking for in the market then head to one of the shops that surround the market place. These local business aren't the large chain stores, they sell many items that are unique to Settle and the surrounding areas. And parents don't have to worry about taking their kids into these stores; many of them are family-oriented. You will certainly find souvenirs to be proud of.

It should not take much encouragement for you to want to check out the local countryside. The Ribble valley is the dividing line between the rolling gritstone and the limestone country to the north. If you head out into the limestone what you will be struck with is the absolute beauty. Descriptions will make it sound less than amazing but the pearly white of the limestone, pocketed with scars, and potholes really is a sight to see. There are also many caves in this area that hold unique treasures. These caves have been home to mammoths, hippos, and even contained flint. The discovery of flint was exciting for the area since flint is not found locally, that means it was transported here for use by the early settlers, most likely as arrowheads, other weapons or tools of some sort.

The moor lands are equally beautiful. They are covered by peat and heather. These "unspoiled" lands are considered an Area of Outstanding Beauty. Take a trip through them to see why this area is often chosen for many of the films and television shows produced in England. It is a true natural wonder to behold. Where the moors and the limestone meet are several grand waterfalls. These waterfalls were often visited by the composer Edward Elgar. Truly a must see on anyone's list.

While you are out and about don't forget to try the footpaths of the Three Peaks. Whernside, Ingleborough, and Pen-y-ghent offer post card worthy scenes and have many good foot paths for you to take. It is truly an enjoyable way to spend the day.

If you are interested in many of the artifacts that were found in the Victorian Caves, then head across the river to Giggleswick. Here you will find the museum that is home to many interesting pieces. These pieces tell the story of the Settle and Giggleswick area. You can see many of the artifacts that were found in the caves of the countryside.
