Situated on the northern slopes of the South Downs is the market town of Petersfield. Founded during the 12th Century by William Fitz Robert the town didn't actually receive its charter until after his death when his widow championed it in 1198. Petersfield has grown in popularity since then thanks to its position on well travelled routes, being a prosperous spot for local sheep farmers and, having a "cottage level" manufacturing industry in cloth and leather.

There are several things to do here in Petersfield. For starters there is the market. Held several times throughout the week, the town's market is a great place to get many unique items. On occasions the farmers and stallholders from the French twin town of Barentin visit Petersfield to set up a French Market periodically. You won't want to miss out any one of these interesting markets. If you are interested in the farmer's market these are held once a month so you can enjoy many of their tasty locally grown food.

What trip to a historic town would be complete without a trip to the church. St. Peter's Church is a beautiful Norman Church. It is believed that the original building actually predates the town's charter. The original building was a very simple building. It was believed to have been just a cruciform with a central tower. But by the end of the 1100s there were some buildings added to the north and south of the existing building. The central tower was then replaced by the west tower, after which the central tower was removed. Visitors can enjoy the serenity and beauty of the Norman Chancel Arches. Be sure to stop by and take in the lovely building and stop and say a prayer before continuing on your way.

When you've finished visiting the historic church then why don't you spend some time outside? Take a trip over to the Uppark House and Garden. Here you can see a beautiful 17th Century home that is set on the South Downs. One of the first things you will notice isn't the architecture or the beautifully restored interior, while these things are great, what you will notice is the great views. The South Downs views can't be matched anywhere else. But once you've made your way inside you will notice the great interior and the artifacts. You will see wonderful paintings, textiles, furniture, and ceramics. You will also get to see a wonderful little doll house. Wander into the servants rooms before going out to the gardens. Here you will get to see the rooms as they were in the late 19th century when H.G. Wells' mother was here as a housekeeper. Then take a step outside to the garden and see the wonderful shrubs, perennials, foliage, and the woodlands that surround the home.

If you are in Petersfield on the third Sunday of each month during the spring and summer you should take the guided tour around the town. You will start at St Peter's Church on the square at 2:30 in the afternoon. There will be an introduction covering the area and brief history of the town before you start wandering the streets. While there is no need to book in advance it is asked that you stop by the Tourist Information Center and register your attendance.
