Once a part of Lancashire, Oldham is a rather large town now located in the county of Greater Manchester in England. It lies between the Irk and Medlock Rivers. Oldham was once known for being the center of textile manufacturing during the 19th Century when it rose to the prominent position of being the international center for textiles. The town itself dates back to 865 although there is evidence humans have lived in the area since the Neolithic times due to arrow heads found in the area.

A stop that most visitors to the town make is the Gallery Oldham which is located in what is known as the Oldham Cultural Quarter. The gallery is always full of public art. The art is often local but can also be international and is always mixed and varies in style. This free gallery will give you an interesting take on the artists that live in the area. You will get to see sculptures, photos as well as contemporary art.

For those who want to enjoy all that Oldham has to offer then why don't you wander the Oldham Town Trail? There are guides available to assist you, all you have to do is check with the tourist information point for assistance. You will get to see the Parish Church of St Mary's which was built in gothic style, and then see the old Town Hall which has the window boarded up but with a nice green wooden board, stop and check out the plaque though you might find it interesting.

If you feel like venturing out into the nearby towns then head over to Rochdale in Lancashire. Here you can check out the Rochdale Art Gallery. This gallery is split into four galleries and has something for everyone to enjoy. It is built for families which means you don't have to worry about the kids getting into trouble, there are plenty of activities for them to enjoy.

While you are in the Lancashire area, head over to Portland to see the Portland Basin Museum. This museum is located in the rebuilt Ashton Canal Warehouse. The warehouse has been restored to its original splendor of 1834. Here you can take a hands-on approach to learning about the industrial history. You can see things about hatting, gloving, coalmining, farming and even the Jones Sewing Machines. There is also an interactive canal boat for you to explore.

As you return to Oldham be sure to check out the Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery located in Uppermill only 4 miles from Oldham. Here you can see historic artifacts of many of the people who crated history here. You can see what it was like for a prehistoric visitor to hunt in the summer time on the hill tops. There is also exhibits of what it was like for farmers who make a living by weaving clothing and working the land. There are also exhibits of brass bands, and soldiers who were from the area.
