On the banks of the River Usk is the Welsh town of Newport. With over 100,000 residents this city is considered to be one of the most popular cities in the unitary authority of Wales. Newport is a picturesque town with a backdrop of hills, rivers and low lying marshes.

Thanks to having won of the best mail choirs in the region, Newport is home to many live concerts. Even if their own choir is not performing visitors can often find concerts held in this city regularly at the Newport Leisure Center and Newport City Live Arena. The town also hosts the National Eisteddfods.

Newport is known as a party town as well. Thanks to the pubs, bars nightclubs and various restaurants Newport is among the top 50 Big Night-out spots in the world. For those that like to party you can go until dawn if you'd like. The variety of outings to choose from is enough to meet any ones tastes.

A popular place to visit is the Riverfront Arts Centre. The small art gallery here plays host to a collection of local artists. The free exhibitions include sculpting, photography, and paintings. The display rotates throughout the year. The Art Centre is also home to the principle theatre in Newport. With a capacity of 493 visitors can attend a wide array of functions at the theatre from comedy to opera there is something for everyone here. You can also take workshops in various kinds of dance and music if you are interested.

Nature lovers will enjoy a trip to the Newport Wetlands Reserve. Covering 437 hectares this low lying area is home to many native birds as well as visiting birds such as wigeons, and teals.

Newport is also home to an early 15th century castle. Visitors will be able to enjoy architecture that dates back to 1405. Many of the Welsh castles have been dramatically updated in the 1800's this castle still has many of the original features. Visiting this historic site is well worth the tour to see some of the original architecture that is still in place over six hundred years later.

Another historical site that many visitors enjoy is the Tredegar House. Set on a 90 acre park this house dates back to the early 16th century. A tour of the house will give visitors a feel for what life was like back in the 1500's. The home includes cramped servant's quarters alongside the large state rooms that were used by the home's occupants.
