Originally settled around an Iron Age fort, Lymington quickly became known for making salt. Today it's not only known for its salt but the town is found in literature, such as Patriot Games by Tom Clancy and The Children of the New Forest by Captain Marryat. Its location on the west banks of the Lymington River have made it a popular tourist destination for many different types of people, but especially those who are sailing aficionados.

Lymington's sailing history makes it a key place for those who enjoy the sport. With two sailing clubs in town it's easy to understand why. Lymington River has strong tides and shallow depths which make it a challenging track but it is still among the most popular. During the summer months visitors can participate or watch the Thursday Evening Race. As many as 100 boats can register to race on Thursday nights during the summer months and these races do not disappoint.

For those interested in the history of Lymington and its surrounding area need to visit the St. Barbe Museum. Here you will find hands-on displays. You can track development of Lymington from the simple camp it was up to the market town it has become. You can also look at salt makers, boat builders and even smugglers. These exhibits are for all ages and just about anyone can find something to enjoy during your visit here. There is also an art gallery that has exhibitions that include works on loan to the gallery from regional and national collections.

For those that are interested in swimming, Lymington was once home to two pools. One of those pools is actually a seawater lido. Built in 1833 this is considered a historic Roman Seawater Bath, even though it was built well after Roman times. Today, however, this historic pool is no longer open. Visitors might be able to get a glimpse of it from the outside and find more information on it in the Museum but it is an extraordinary piece of history.

Lymington is also located near the New Forest area. Here, nature lovers can wander, walk, ride or cycle while enjoying the great outdoors. It's serene atmosphere makes it a popular stop on the nature lovers tour.

There are many outdoor activities to enjoy during your stay. Lymington is home to a nine-hole golf course, a rowing club, the two sailing clubs, tennis courts, football pitches and even a skate park for those who enjoy skate boarding.
