The town of Leatherhead is located in the county of Surrey. Leatherhead is on the River Mole and is considered part of the Mole Valley District. While there is no established date of settlement it is believed to have been settled during the Anglo-Saxon period. The settlement does date back as far as the time of the Domesday Book when its name was Leret. The city continued to grow especially with the addition of the railway.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of the town then you want to go to the Leatherhead Museum. It is located within a couple of minutes' walk away from High Street. The 17th century timber frame cottage that houses the museum is a piece of the local history in and of itself. As you explore the exhibits you will find a wide variety of interesting artifacts. Among the artifacts you will find is the swan from the old Swan Hotel. You will also find a collection of Ashtead pottery and models of the cottage like the museum resides in. There are also models of the Roman Villa that resides in Ashtead. You will see many old photographs and maps for you to see. You will be able to track the history of the town. There are some exhibits here that rotate out so you will be sure to find something new and interesting should you repeat your visit throughout the year.

If you are there with the family you shouldn't worry about finding things to do. The National Trust at Box Hill is a great place to take the kids if you are looking for something a little more educational to do. Here you will find an education center and several displays made just for the kids. There is also a trail to travel and a quiz at the end of the tour just for the kiddies.

Chessington World of Adventures is the area's leading theme park. Not only can you enjoy riding the rides such as water rides, and roller coasters but you can see the wild life. This park is not just about the thrill of the ride but the beauty of the wild. This park includes a zoo and sea life center. Don't have time to see and do everything in one day, don't worry about it and stay at their Safari themed hotel so you can take it all in.

If you are interested in enjoying the nature of Surrey then take a walking tour. Leatherhead is at the gateway to the Surrey Hills. This ancient wood and oak pasture is a picturesque area. Take a walk on one of the many trails to see some spectacular sites and some interesting wild life. If you are an outdoors person it would be a shame to miss out on this choice area for walking. Take the afternoon and have a stroll along the paths.
