Established as far back as the 1100s the town of Kenilworth is located in the central part of Warwickshire country. This historic town is known for its architectural masterpieces.
The best known piece of history is the Kenilworth Castle. Founded in the 1120s the castle is known for having an extensive water defense and was the site of the great siege of the then future King Edward I in 1266. While it is believed that the remaining keep was part of the original structure there are indications that the original structures consisted of an earthen mound which was surmounted by wooden buildings, all of which are no longer standing. Throughout the years the castle had been added to and much of the castle fell into disrepair. The English Heritage recently completed a complete restoration and the castle and its gardens.
Another stop in the historical tour is St. Nicholas' Church. Built in the early 1100s by Geoffrey de Clinton, the original house was supposed to be an Augustinian priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Even though the priory dissolved in 1583 there are some sections of the original masonry near the church. The Church of St. Nicholas fell into near ruin after this time. However, in 1865 the building was fully restored in 1865.
Historic sites are what the town is best known for but it's not the only thing. Visitors who stay in the town between the 8th and 16th of May will be treated to the Kenilworth Festival. First held over 70 years ago, the festival was reinstated in 2005. It was held with limited success for two years and was called off in 2007. In 2008 the Rotary Club took over the festival making it bigger and better than ever. It was such a success than the 2009 festival was even more spectacular. It is even rumored to get better each year.
Kenilworth is also home to the Two Castle Run. Established as just something fun to do in 1983, the event has grown to attract over 3000 entrants. Beginning at the front gate of Warwick Castles participants run the 10 kilometers to through the front gate Kenilworth Castle. You don't have to participate in the 10 kilometer run to enjoy it. Each June visitors and competitors enjoy this bracing run.
