The Isle of Mull is located off Scotland's west coast in the area of Argyll and Bute. It is the second largest island in the Inner Hebrides and the fourth largest in all of Scotland as well as in Great Britain While the 2001 Census puts the Mull's population at 2,667, tourist great increase this number in the summer months. A majority of the permanent population resides in Tobermory, Mull's capital and only burgh until 1973.

Mull was first inhabited just after the ice-age ended in about 6000 BC. During the Bronze Age the people there built bochs, menhirs and a stone circle. There has been many artifacts found as evidence including cairns, standing stone, pottery and knife blades from the period. Iron age inhabitants built protective forts, crannogs and duns from about 600 BC to 400 AD. During the 6th century the early Christian period started. It is believed that in 563 AD Christianity was brought to Britain's main land by St. Columba when he went to Ireland to establish a Montessori just off the southwest point of mull on the Island of Iona.

Mull is the home to many historical building including the Duart and Torosay Castles. Both castles are open from Easter to September for the public to view. Lachlan Macquarie't mausoleum is located on the island in the Gruline village. He was the Governor of New South Waled from 1809-1822. He was also born on an island near by name Ulva. A ferry connects Mull to the mainland including Lochaline to Fishnish, Oban to Craignure and Kilchoan to Tobermory. While the Fishnish ferry does not require prebooking, it is a farther drive north on a single lane road.

Mull is linked by ferries to several other points as well. You can get to the island of Iona from Fionnphort as well as from Oskamull to Ulva. There is also direct sailing available to Oban, Barr, Coll and Tiree from Tobermory. Then during the summer there is sailing to Staffa and Iona from Oban. It is also possible to travel by private small aircraft in and out of Mull using a landing strip close to Salen.
