Huddersfield is located close to were the River Colne and River Holme meet. Its recorded population, according to the 2001 Census was over 146,000 making it the 10th biggest town in the UK. It is the metropolitan borough of Kirklees' largest urban area serving as the borough's administrative headquarters.

The town is famous in the area for vital part it played in the Industrial Revolution. The government was eventually thwarted in its attacks during the period mostly due to the retaliation that took place in 1812 after a mill worker who worked as a prosecutor of the Luddites was killed. This helped to increase the parliaments interest in helping those that work in the mills passing laws to protect their safety.

re provision for those out of work, and to introduce regulations to improve conditions in the mills.

Today Huddersfield is a town devoted to high education with two major colleges, the University of Huddersfield and Greenhead College. Sports also play a vital role in the town due it Huddersfield Town F.C., a Football League One that was started in 1908 and their rugby team the Huddersfield giants started in 1895 that is part of the European Super League.

Despite the presence of the university which employs the most people in the town, it is still considered a manufacturing town. While the amount of people employed in the textile industry has dropped the companies that are still going produce massive amounts of wool products that require little labor to make. The town also has Andrew Jones Pies which has won several awards for their pie making. A gas explosion at the plant killed a worker in April of 2009. There are multiple companies that are in the chemical and engineering industries. Cummins Turbo Technologies produce turbochargers, Pennine Radio Limited makes electron transformer and sheet metal and there are also many other niche manufacturers.

Huddersfield is full of grand works of architecture from the Victorian era including its Grade I railway station. The station is one the most beautiful in England, coming in second to the St Pancras in London. It is located in St. George's Square.
