The market town of Holt is located in the County of Norfolk. Because of the location the town is thought to have gotten its name from the Anglo-Saxon word for woodland. The town is set on the high ground of the Cromer-Holt ridge. Holt was pretty much destroyed in a great fire of 1708. The fire lasted only three hours but most of the homes and buildings were destroyed because they were made of timber. Damages were estimated to be at around 11,000 pounds which was quite a bit by those standards. Thanks to the rebuilding of the town there are still many points of interest for visitors.

An interesting spot to visit is the Obelisk. Actually one of the pair of gateposts from Melton Constable Park this pineapple-topped Obelisk was originally part of the pair, the other was given to the town of Dereham in 1757. At the start of World War II Holt whitewashed the distances and name of various places off of their Obelisk and is still available for visitors to view.

While you are in Obelisk Plain then be sure to check out Blind Sam. The Queen Victoria Jubilee Lanter that is located here is called Blind Sam. When it was originally erected in 1887 it was in the Market Place, and was moved to the Plain in 1921. Its purpose was to light the Market Place and provide drinking water from the two fountains at the bottom. It has been restored to its natural beauty and should be seen when you are visiting the Obelisk.

Check out the Picturecraft Gallery in Holt. Here you can see a variety of original artwork. With so many pieces of professional and semi-professional artworks you will get to see a great deal of work. Since there is up to six events a year you will be sure to find something extremely interesting.

There are also several different eateries for you to enjoy. If you like going out for a quick bite then you'll have a wide choice. From simple cafes to something a little more extravagant there is something for just about every taste.
