The minster town of Halifax is probably best known for its mackintosh, chocolate and toffee. It was also a well-known as a center of England's woolen industry. The town got its name from the words Holy Face because of the belief the town is the burial spot for the head of John the Baptist after his execution. Parts of the town were founded back in the 12th Century and since then the town has always been dedicated to St John the Baptist. The town was the center of mass hysteria in 1938 a supposed serial killer was on the loose. After Scotland Yard was called in it was discovered there was no serial killer. Despite the serial killer hysteria, the town of Halifax is home to many cultural areas for visitors to enjoy.

The Eureka! Museum for children was opened in 1992. Here kids can enjoy the interactive exhibits. They can check out the galleries of Me and My Body, Living and Working Together, Our Global Garden, and Sound Space. If you have kids that are younger than five years old they can head to the Sound Garden, Desert Discovery, and Creativity Space. This non-profit museum encourages not just the kids to be involved in the activities but for the parents to get their hands dirty too. For pre adolescent children, this is a must stop.

If you want to go see amateurs actors at work then head over to the Halifax Thespian and the Actors' Workshop. You can see all types of all kinds of plays and musical theatre and there is not a professional actor in the lot. You can even enjoy a performance by children occasionally as well.

If you are more into professional performances then head over to the Victoria Theater. Here you can see a variety of plays and other performances. You can also see a variety of Choral Society performances. The theater has been the site of the Choral Society performances since 1817.

There is also quite a few landmarks to enjoy while you are in Halifax. Since Halifax was at one time the center of England's woolen industry the Piece Hall can be an interesting stop. The Piece Hall is located in the former cloth hall. You can enjoy seeing this ancient building. Each Saturday morning the Piece Hall is open for business for two hours. Here you can see 315 merchant trading rooms and is a public market. Visitors can enjoy seeing the inside and outside of this 1779 building.

You can also head over to the Dean Clough Mill which is known for their carpets. Today it is a thriving business park. Visitors can enjoy this antique building from both inside and out.

Of course since you are in the minster town of Halifax you probably want to head over to the 15th Century St. John the Baptist church. Although it was dedicated in the 15th Century building it didn't achieve the status of cathedral until 1888. Seeing this beautiful church can be the high point of any vacation.
