On the coast of the North Sea is the small town of Filey. Located in North Yorkshire County of England, Filey started out as a fishing community. Filey is also thought to be the final resting place of the Bonhomme Richard, the famous ship sailed by John Paul Jones the "father of the US Navy". It's last known location is unknown but it is known that it was lost after The Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779. The ship is believed to have fought in the battle and then it eventually sunk in Filey Bay. Today, the town is probably best known for being a seaside resort.
It is a seaside resort and so the first place people are going to head is to the beach, and why not the five mile stretch of surf and sand is considered a safe beach. The beach itself is situated in a very wide bay and has a Sculpture trail for visitors to enjoy. Add to that the long promenade that edges against the beach and you don't have to really leave the sea all day. Play in the sand and water and when you get hunger or thirsty then be sure to visit any one of the tasty shops that litter the promenade.
If you are up for some adventure while you're at the beach, then head to the North Bay where Filey Brigg juts out into the sea. Here you will find many rock pools to explore and enjoy.
Sometimes it's just too hot or rainy to really enjoy the beach, that's just the hazards of visiting the sea. When that happens you might want to visit the Filey Museum. Here you can learn all about the fishing heritage that started it all. Not only can you learn about the legacy that made the town so popular but you can also learn about how the town grew from a simple fishing hot spot to the seaside destination it is today. There are eight rooms to explore here and each room has its own theme. It is interesting to see items such as the Lifeboat room, photography room and the replica of a Victorian room.
If your interest lies in the wildlife of the area then you should visit the Filey Dams Nature Reserve. Here you will get to see a wide variety of not only wildlife but botanical specimens as well. Birdwatchers can choose from two viewing hides so you can see all the wonderful birds that call the reserve home.
