The town of Bicester is one of the fastest-growing towns in the entire county of Oxfordshire. Because of this fact, many people suppose that Bicester is a recent town that has arisen out of either urban sprawl or redrawn districts, as is the case with many of England's growing towns. Neither of these explanations holds water, however, and the truth is that Bicester is actually a very old and distinguished part of England that just so happens to have a great location, being mere miles from larger boroughs like London and Birmingham. While it is true that the ridiculously massive growth of London and Birmingham may have attributed a bit to Bicester's thirty thousand-strong population and counting, don't think for a second that the town is simply an outlying burg of either of those behemoths. For one, Bicester enjoys a quaint and peaceful atmosphere in spite of its relative size. Also, Bicester has been an important and unique entity within the country for countless centuries.

Most experts put the birth of Bicester as we know it somewhere around the fifth or six century. This was a time when Saxons were in control of a large part of England and many towns in Oxfordshire and beyond share this common lineage. The origin of the town's name is believed to translate into something to the effect of "two forts". This theory has much evidence behind it as two forts were in fact discovered in the city that are of Roman descent. The Romans vanquished quite a lot of Saxons when the Empire stretched its formidable hand throughout Europe and it seems that Bicester was an important stronghold to both nations. The towns ties with things of a military nature began here but this concept has been a part of Bicester ever since.

In the late 1600s, when the Civil War gripped the nation, it was Bicester that was chosen by the Parliamentary forces as their headquarters. Bicester was also the home of the Bicester Militia, one of the largest and most revolutionary private forces in the 1800s. Bicester still maintains its adherence to all things military and in both World Wars Bicester was an important location for British aeroplanes and its training of soldiers.

Bicester is about more than just military history, though, and a walk through the town will make that fact clear right away. Bicester is a town very much in the present and any tourist will have their work cut out for them trying to take in all the fun and exciting activities before the flight back home. To be sure, Bicester has a healthy tourist economy that seems to be growing along with its population and this trend has continued unabated ever since the advent of the railways. These days it is easier than ever to get to Bicester whether you're traveling out of London, Birmingham, or Banbury. Similarly, getting to any of these large cities is just as easy and effortless thanks to the efficient work of Buckinghamshire Railway.
