Bedford is a big town and has become the administrative center for the larger Borough of Bedford. Running through the center of town is the River Great Ouse which is lined by gardens and is called The Embankment. Inside the gardens a war memorial has been erected to honor the fallen soldiers for WWI that was created by sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger in 1921. The memorial is of a Knight killing a dragon and has an inscription that states:
"To Bedfordians who died, many in early youth, some full of years and honour, but who all alike gave their lives for their country."
The remains of a medieval castle are called Bedford Castle Mound. It is located near the town center and less than 100 yards from Bedford Bridge. In circa 2000 a retaining wall was built by the Bedford Borough Council on the south side that faces the river. There is a paved path that goes around the side of the Bedford Castle Mound and up to the top where this a grassy flat circular area.
St. Paul's Church is the main church in Bedford and is located in the square. One of the main features of the church and town is the church's tall spire. In 1066 there was another church on the same place but in the 13th Century construction began on the present day church. The tower and spire were totally rebuilt between 1865 and 1868. There have been small alterations and two transepts added on since. The BBC's daily service was broadcast from the church in 1941 during WWII.
Located just north of the center of town is the town's largest urban park, Bedford Park. The parks Victorian design can be still be seen in many of it original features that have been retained. These original features include a bandstand and cricket pavilions. Both of these features are still being used by the town today. The town also has a large country park named Priory Country Park. The park is located on River Ouse's north bank which is in eastern Bedford. Green Flag status has been awarded to both parks.
