Located on the River Anton in the county of Hampshire is the town of Andover. The first documentation of Andover was in 950 when the King, Edred, chose this place to build his royal hunting lodge. Through the years the town became known for its watermills. The Domesday Book listed six mills in and around the town of Andover. While actual use of the mills ceased in the early part of the twentieth century, there are a few mills that have been restored to their natural beauty.

For visitors that are interested in the Iron Age should head over to the Museum of the Iron Age. This museum details what life would have been like during the Iron Age period. Here visitors can see artifacts from the time period along with life sized models to give the visitor a true sense of what life was like back then. You will see items from farming, trade, crafts, religion, and warfare. You will find a reseouces room here as well to further your knowledge on the subject with items such as periodicals, books, photographs and excavation reports.

A short trek out of town will bring you to your next great site. The ruins of Ludgershall Castle are a wonderful stop when you are staying in Andover. These ruins date back to the 12th and 13th Century when the village was expected to be a strong hold. Today only scraps and ruins remain of this once impressive castle. Nearby there is also the remains of the preaching cross that is located in the center of town.

In the Council offices you will find a unique piece of art history. The Test Valley Tapestry took almost ten years to complete and is composed of nineteen separate panels. These panels show scenes representing the 45 different villages and towns in the Andover area. The work took almost 1500 people to complete. It is a beautiful rendering of the area throughout history.

Those that are interested in the motor racing circuit should head on up to Thruxton. Here you can visit the Thruxton Motor Circuit. You can watch the stock car races or motor bikes. For the motor enthusiast this is a must stop if you are in the Andover area.
