The small market town of Thirsk has been around since the times of the Domesday Book. Back in the time of the Domesday Book, 1086, the town was actually called Tresche. This small town is actually built around the market square. With the market at the center of the town, it doesn't take much imagination for visitors to realize what is core for Thirsk's survival.

There is still an open air market held ever Monday and Saturday. This will allow those shop happy visitors ample opportunity to see all that Thirsk has to offer. There is nothing like fresh produce and unique items to make your trip that much more enjoyable. Don't go looking for name brands here either. Thirsk is not home to the big chain department stores so you can rest assured you will be getting something uniquely Thirsk to take home with you. Even though there are no big name stores there is no shortage of what you can find.

If you want to learn more about the town and its area then just wander over to the Thirsk Museum. Here you will see many interesting artifacts and exhibits. Here you can learn the history of this ancient town and come to appreciate some of the beauty and quaintness associated with Thirsk.

Thirsk is also home to the 15th century St Mary's Church. This Anglican Church is located at the end of the Kirkgate, a cobbled street that is lined with a majority of the stores and eateries of the town. The church was built between 1420 and 1480 and is done in the traditional medieval style. There is some Gothic architecture that is absolutely outstanding. The tower rises 80ft into the air and has served the needs of the residents of Thirsk for the past 500 years. While visitors are encouraged to visit and see the absolute beauty there are regular services every morning.

While you are in Thirsk be sure to enjoy one of their many different restaurants. They have a variety of types to choose from. You can enjoy a nice sit down meal or simply go by one of their many takeaways and take it back to your hotel room.

For those who are fans of the author and veterinarian James Herriot can go to the World of James Herriot. This museum has everything you would want to know about the famous vet and author. You can wander through the Skeldale House and see what it was like for Herriot back in the 1940s, the time in which he lived. You can also view the some 4000 exhibits at the only Veterinary Science museum in the United Kingdom. It is a great learning opportunity for both young and old alike.
