Located in the Staffordshire county of England is the local government and town of Tamworth. The town of Tamworth has been in existence since Saxon times and was the capital of Mercia during the reign of King Offa, which was the largest of the English Kingdoms during its time. During the attack of the Danes in 874 the town was ransacked and remained in ruin until Ethelfleda rebuilt it in 913. Because of its rich history and location there are many interesting things for visitors to see and enjoy.
Tamworth Castle is probably the biggest tourist site in Tamworth. This Grade I listed building is a relatively small castle and is located on the bank of the Tame River. This castle was originally built by the Normans sometime during the 11th century. It is considered to be one of the best preserved Norman castles today. While there are many original 11th century pieces still remaining on this castle there are several additions that date later than the original. In the 12th century the Keep shell containing a gate tower and residential accommodations was added. And in the 13th century the three story north range was added. The three story south range wasn't added until the 17th century. While the great hall dates to the 15th century. The castle was used as a residence until the late 1800s when after Thomas Cooke's death the castle was put up for sale and was purchased by the Tamworth Corporation. Visitors can enjoy this historic building.
But Tamworth isn't all stuffy castles either. Tamworth is home to a unique fun activity center called the Snow Dome. This center provides guests with year round snow. You and the entire family can enjoy snowboarding, skiing, ice skating, and tobogganing no matter what the weather is like outside. This real snow center is comprised of a 170 meter main slope, and two Snow academy areas for those who want to learn how its done. There is also a gym, spa, work out area and indoor swimming pool for the adults to enjoy. The kids aren't left out with the only children's snow play area in England. There is also an ice rink and the only Ice Track in the UK. It's a great way to beat the heat and have some winter fun.
And to continue the fun with the family then you should go to Drayton Manor Theme Park. This theme park is located on the grounds of what was once Drayton Manor. There are simple easy rides that allow you to enjoy the beauty of the scenic area and then there are the white knuckle rides that get your heart racing. Drayton is home to the Europe's only stand-up rollercoaster the Shockwave. There is also the steel rollercoaster, G-Force, that has three inversions. While there is also a couple of water rides and walk-through rides that will really impress you.
