Southend-on-Sea is a popular seaside resort that is located on the Thames Gateway. Home to the world's longest pier there are many tourist opportunities and has been since the Georgian era.
Being a seaside resort it's pretty obvious what the main attraction of the town is . . . the sea. Thanks to the award winning beaches for visitors to tour, there are many sandy spots for you to worship the sun to all you want. Over seven miles of sand is separated into eight distinct beaches. The Bell Wharf Beach is one of the smaller beaches, perfect for those looking for a little quiet time during their beach stay. Families can enjoy the Three Shells Beach which is home to climbing frames and paddling pool for the little children as well as sand and surf.
The Southend Marin Activities can help you get out on the water instead of in it. Here you can take lessons on how to drive a power boat, windsurfing, sailing and jetskiing. There are also other activities for children nine and up. Unfortunately you are expected to know how to swim prior to registering for any activities at the center and children under the age of nine are not allowed to participate.
The pier itself is littered with things to do. Stretching 1.34 miles into the sea the large pier is home to several arcades and the wildly popular Adventure Island. Here visitors can choose from 50 rides and attractions. If you are looking for some fun bowling, then visit the bowling alley located on the pier. If you just want to see some wonderful views then hop on the tram that runs the length of the pier, or you can walk, and head out into the sea to get a view of the picturesque sites.
The sea front is also home to the popular Sea-life aquarium. Here you can see all the beauty of the sea without disturbing their inhabitants. This fun filled and educational aquarium will allow you to view some of the most interesting animals in the world up close.
After you've spent days playing in the sun and surf it might be time to head inside for a little while. There are four museums for you to choose from. Interested in the history and wildlife of Southend on Sea then visit the Central Museum. Housed in what used to be the library, it now displays archeological finds as well as conservation and cataloging of these interesting features. Here you will learn the history of the area and how it became the popular resort it is today.
The Planetarium is also another great museum to visit while in Southend on Sea. During the forty minute program you can explore the evening sky while being guided through the stars and constellation by a trained guide.
Southend on Sea is sun and surf as well as excitement and culture.
