Kingussie is located in the Highland region of Scotland and is a small town. Kingussie is the capital of the Badenoch district and is one of the several settlements in the district. A9 runs adjacent to the town and the old route is Kingussie's main street. Kingussie in Gaelic means, Ceann a' Ghiuthsaich, or Head of the Pine Forest. The ruins of the Ruthven Barracks date back to the 18th Century and are open for tours at all times.
They are not directly in town due to the fact that the village was moved to get away from the floods caused by the River Spey. The site of the Ruthven Barracks used to also have Ruthven Castles, where the Comyns, Lords of Badenoch held a seat in the middle ages. The Guinness Book of World Records declared in 2005 that Kingussie Shinty Team was the most successful of all time, with their 20 consecutive league wins and 4 of those seasons in a row undefeated in the early 1990s.
The Kingussie railway station, which is located southeast of the High Street, it is part of a main line that goes south to Inverness after it passes through Edinburgh and Glasgow. In recent years, a television show called the Monarch of the Glen has been made in Kingussie and around it. Monarch of the Glen's main filming location is about 12 miles from the town at the Ardverikie Estate. You can park across from the Gatehouse and hike up to the Big House. This is roughly an eight mile kike but, for Monarch of the Glen Fan's, is more than worth it.
Near to there is the Highland Wildlife Park and the Highland Fold Museum, in Newtonmore three miles from Kingussie. Both are free to the public and great places to visit. Recently Kingussie saw a bit of fame when it was used in Danny Boyle's eight-time oscar willing film, "Slumdog Millionaire." There is a scene in which a women's voice is calling into a call center, where the main character was at work, and it showed that the call originated for Kingussie on 4 Ruthven Rd.
